Chapeau won the fastest of four divisions of the $118,475 New York Sire Stakes for 3-year-old filly pacers Thursday afternoon at Monticello Raceway, touring the half-mile oval in 1:58.1 for driver Jeff Gregory.

Although Gregory had Chapeau on the lead through much of the mile, she was actually passed in deep stretch by Panax and driver Kyle DiBenedetto, but the daughter of Magical Mike battled back to post her first win of the year in four attempts.

A five-time winner last year at two, Chapeau is trained by Dave Spagnola for owner Michael Polansky.

Chapeau was the betting favorite just as the three other NYSS division winners were. Also taking their splits was Venus Blue Chip, who won in 1:58.3 for driver Joe Pavia Jr. for owners Steve Held, Dijo Racing Stable and Joe Barbera; Belle Reve, who won in 1:59 for driver Bill Bailey for owners Elkin, Namiotka, Tancredi and the Slo-Down Stable; and Perfectly Sealed, who was driven to a 1:58.2 victory by Gregory for owners Towne, Barnello, Bailey and Colosi.
