Colts to miss Matron

November 03, 2003

Trainer Trond Smedshammer qualified three 2-year-old colt trotters for the $184,126 Matron, but none of them will be in the race Sunday. Only a five-horse field will go postward.

Smedshammer said he was under the impression that Dover's race office operated the same way as the one at the Meadowlands: when you enter the elim, you're automatically entered in the final if you advance. So he didn't call the entries in. When he did call at 12:10 p.m. on Tuesday to check on the draw, he was told he needed to enter the three horses--ENS Crescendo, Tennis Champ and Solomon Blue Chip--in the final as well.

"I can't believe they didn't call me," said Smedshammer. "I know it was my fault, but you would think they would wonder about three horses. You would think they would want to put the best race together possible."

The trainers of the also eligibles also did not enter their horses, thus the five-horse field. From the rail out, the field will be: Classic Hogan, American Mike, Knights Tail, Great Challenger and Self Obsessed.
