Rocknroll Hanover staked his claim to Horse of the Year honors Saturday night at the Meadowlands with a 1:49.4 victory in the $555,000 Breeders Crown 3-year-old colt and gelding pace for Brian Sears. Leading X Ample and Eric Ledford edged Gryffindor and David Miller for second.

The raced opened with Village Jolt and Ron Pierce rushing out from post 10 to take the lead in a :26.2 opening quarter. Gryffindor settled second, followed by Gold Dust Beach (John Campbell) and American Ideal (Mark MacDonald). American Ideal made the first move, brushing past a reluctant Village Jolt and reaching the half in :54.1. Campbell then came first-over with Gold Dust Beach, providing cover for Rocknroll Hanover, who was followed by Leading X ample.

The three quarters was passed in 1:21.4 and at the top of the lane Sears rolled his charge off his cover and swooped into the lead. The son of Western Ideal was in command down the lane as he scored his 12th victory in 18 starts this year for owners Jeffrey Snyder, Perretti Racing Stable and Phyllis Campbell?s Lothlorien Equestrian Center. The colt is trained by Brett Pelling, the leading money-winning trainer in Breeders Crown history, who is retiring from the sport and moving his family to Australia.

With the victory, Rocknroll Hanover?s earnings for the year reaches $2,223,257 and $2,754,038 lifetime.

For Sears, it was his third Breeders Crown triumph on the night, equaling Ron Pierce for the evening?s work. Of the race, Sears said he ?just kinda waited for them to come back to me a little bit. I ended up second-over at the head of the lane. I couldn?t have asked for a better trip.?
