Daley Deposit Only gets morning-line nod in NJ Classic

May 28, 2008

It took a photo to separate Daley Deposit Only from Mr. Nice Guy in their elimination race, but this Saturday a nose could nab the lion\'s share of the $500,000 Anthony Abbatiello New Jersey Classic at the Meadowlands.

Daley Deposit Only was given the slight 5-2 nod as the morning line favorite after narrowly holding off Mr. Nice Guy to win their New Jersey Classic elimination in 1:51.4 last week. Daley Deposit Only will start from post nine in the final with George Brennan in the sulky. Mr. Nice Guy, 7-2, will leave from post seven with Ron Pierce. The New Jersey Classic for 3-year-old pacing colts is carded as race eight (est. 9:32 p.m. post time). The Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey sponsors the richest of all state-bred events.

Daley Deposit Only, trained by Dan Daley, made his 2008 debut in the New Jersey Classic eliminations.  At two, he hit the board in six of 11 starts, while battling a mysterious illness.

\"Last summer, he got really sick, and we still don\'t know what it was,\" Daley recalled. \"It was like he got poisoned or something. He lost 150 pounds in four days. He wouldn\'t eat anything and was all tied up.  It was no ordinary antibiotic treatment. We had to pump him full of fluids. There were no cultures of sickness. Maybe he ate something bad. Fortunately, it\'s history now.

\"This year he matured a lot,\" he continued. \"When you step on the gas pedal, you can definitely go where you want to go. He can just explode and pace a quarter in 26 seconds.\"

Daley\'s wife, Ann-Mari, bred the colt and retains 50 percent ownership. The couple sold 10 percent of Daley Deposit Only to Dan\'s younger brother, Jared Daley of Douglasville, Ga. Richard Lombardo of Solon, Ohio, and Robert Pergament of Coral Springs, Fla., own the remaining 40 percent.
Mr. Nice Guy\'s four wins this season include the $84,000 Matt\'s Scooter final on March 22 and a sharp 1:51 score in a 3-year-old open on April 26. A minor bout of sickness caused the colt to fall short in the New Jersey Sire Stakes on May 17, but he appeared to have it behind him in last week\'s elimination race.  Nat Varty trains the son of Western Ideal.

\"We didn\'t get a fair shot at him (Daley Deposit Only),\" Pierce said after the elimination. \"He was begging to get out and I had to step up the inside. I thought I had it, but George\'s horse (driver George Brennan and Daley Deposit Only) is about eight inches longer than mine and he won the photo. Since he was sick last week, I conserved him a little bit. He needed a (pocket) trip like that to braven him up. I certainly feel like I have the horse to beat. Nat (trainer Nat Varty) has aimed the horse for this race and I expect him to be much better than he was tonight.\"

Originally a $33,000 yearling at the Lexington Selected Sale, Mr. Nice Guy was a private purchase by Robert Scharf\'s Between The Pipes Stable on Feb. 28, 2008.  Scharf\'s father, Martin, is a longtime horse owner best known for campaigning 2000 Horse of the Year Gallo Blue Chip.

The companion event for fillies, the $200,000 Thomas D\'Altrui Miss New Jersey, is carded as race six (est. 8:49 p.m. post time) on Saturday night. The Ross Croghan-trained entry of Diamond Jubilee and Knock Three Times tops the field at 9-5 from posts two and four, respectively.
