Delcrest Julian was the one pulling a rabbit out of the hat Saturday night, October 15 when he defeated divisional leader Daylon Magician in the $170,000 Ontario Sires Stakes for three-year-old trotting colts and geldings at Woodbine Racetrack.
With Paul MacDonell in the sulky, the Rick Zeron pupil prevented Daylon Magician from extending his win streak to eight.
Canadian Trotting Classic champ Daylon Magician (Jack Moiseyev) got away fifth as Imperial Count (Scott Zeron) went straight to the front. Imperial Count set the tempo as he held the lead through fractions of :28, :57.1 and 1:25.2, but into the backstretch, Delcrest Julian had launched a first-over attack from fourth.
Sent off at 6-1, Delcrest Julian trotted on by the leader in deep stretch to score the two and a half length triumph in 1:55.1. Daylon Magician was able to rally for second-place. Sim Brown (Randy Waples) finished third.
“I talked to Rick [Friday] about the horse,” said MacDonell following the victory. “Actually, I drove him one other time for Rick at Flamboro (on August 7 in an OSS Gold elimination) and the horse has come along way since then so he was super tonight.
“I thought if I was up near the front [as they turned for home] that would be great,” he added. “He is such a strong horse there never seems to be an end to him so I knew some horse would have to come a pretty good last quarter to take him down.”
The son of Oaklea Julian-Stars Balance has won four races in 15 seasonal starts. The five-time career winner now has lifetime earnings of $285,597 for owner Terry Hunter of Cambridge.
