Deweycheatumnhowe extended his winning streak to 17 when he captured the $565,000 World Trotting Derby at the Du Quoin State Fair Saturday afternoon, but it took a 1:50.4 effort, and a :27.1 last quarter, to beat Celebrity Secret and Clerk Magistrate to the wire.
Driver Ray Schnittker fired Dewey out of post five in the field of eight and took the lead in the first turn. But Trevor Ritchie, who started from post eight with Clerk Magistrate, had obviously decided to go forward at the start and also headed for the front of the field. Schnittker allowed Clerk Magistrate to clear after passing the first quarter in :27.3, but then quickly re-took, with Ritchie yielding.
Dewey reached the three-quarter mark in 1:23.3 and when the field hit the straightaway the race was on. Ritchie tried to get up the inside with Clerk Magistrate, but Schnittker kept Dewy in line to deny that opportunity to their rival. Celebrity Secret dug in on the outside and joined in the chase as well. Dewey dug in and held off both rivals to snag his 17th straight win.
Dewey\'s 1:50.4 clocking was three-fifths of a second slower than Donato Hanover\'s 1:50.1 world record mile in last year\'s Kentucky Futurity at The Red Mile.
