Doctor Butch and driver George Brennan controlled the $275,000 Art Rooney Final at Yonkers Raceway on Saturday night, taking the lead immediately and never yielding position. They won the race by one-half length in 1:51.2, with Lonewolf Currier second thanks to an incredible :26.1 closing quarter that allowed him to make up 8 lengths.
Doctor Butch, a colt by Art Major owned by Ken Jacobs, set fractions of :27, :56 (:29 second panel) and 1:23.2 before pulling away to the victory. Good Day Mate enjoyed a two-hole trip but couldn't turn it into a victory. Source Of Price challenged first-over the last quarter of the mile but also never threatened.
The victory was the first of the year in the second 2013 start for Doctor Butch, who finished third to Source Of Pride in his Rooney elim the previous week. Doctor Butch was the champion in the New York Sires Stakes last season, winning eight of 12 starts and earning $344,411. Linda Toscano trains Doctor Butch.
Toscano also sent out the winner of the $117,060 Lismore, the companion to the Rooney, the filly JK Black Beauty. Owned by 3 Brothers Stable, the Bettor's Delight filly picked up her third career victory in only her fourth career start.
