On a 99-degree day in Lexington, Hambletonian champ Donato Hanover tuned up for World Trotting Derby with a blazing hot 1:51.3 victory in a qualifier at The Red Mile late Thursday afternoon. With regular driver Ron Pierce along for the ride, Donato Hanover trotted through fractions of :28, :55.1 and 1:24.1 before hitting the wire maybe as much as 50 lengths in front of the runner-up in the race.
\"This could be the boldest statement I\'ve made yet, but this was a very good tightener for what we hope to be a world-record effort at Du Quoin,\" said David Scharf, who shares ownership of Donato Hanover and selected him as a yearling.
Donato Hanover is scheduled to compete in the World Trotting Derby in Du Quoin on Sept. 1, where according to Scharf, he will attempt to lower Tom Ridge\'s 1:50.2 all-age trotting record.
