Horseman Don Pierce of Turlock, Calif., the father of top driver Ron Pierce, died at his home May 15 after a long illness. He was 69.

Pierce, a true California Horseman, was born in California on July 26, 1935. He started his career on the California fair circuit and became a top-catch driver at several of the pari-mutuel tracks around the country.

He was recently honored by California Harness Horseman's Association as a recipient of a "Lifetime Achievement Award" for his outstanding horsemanship, integrity and service to the industry.

His favorite hobby was prospecting for gold in the California Hills.

He is survived by five children, including this year's Hall of Fame inductee Ron Pierce, who followed Don into the horse business.

Saturday, May 21, fellow California horsemen will pay their respect by presenting the Don Pierce Memorial Race with a winner's circle moment of silence.
