Don’t Let’Em and Yannick Gingras set a new track and stakes record on their way to handily winning the $422,350 Peter Haughton Memorial for freshman colt and gelding trotters at the Meadowlands Saturday, August 4. Trained by Jimmy Takter, the Muscle Hill-Passageway colt took control early and stopped the clock in the day’s fourth race in a time of 1:51.4. Green Manalishi S trotted second while Mass Fortune K finished third.
Greenshoe was tabbed the favorite in the field of 10, but the colt broke stride when the gate folded and Don’t Let’Em took full advantage. Marseille was the early leader, but Gingras quickly moved the Brittany Farms-bred freshman to the lead on the way to a :27.1 opening quarter. The duo would set the fractions, trotting a :55.3 half as Gerry and Tim Tetrick moved up to second on the outside.
In the stretch, Gingras asked Don’t Let’Em and he responded, putting daylight between himself and the field. He would go on to cruise to an easy victory, his third in four lifetime starts, for Brittany Farms, Christina Takter, John Fielding and Herb Liverman. With the win, the colt improves his seasonal earnings to $233,675. Don’t Let’Em returned $8.00, $4.20 and $3.20.
The track record was the second of the day for Gingras, who set a new track mark earlier in the card with sophomore pacer Youaremycandygirl. The driver, who is celebrating his 39th birthday, is off to a fast start on Hambo Day.
