Drill Sergeant Sam marches to victory
« Return to News
With Jim Marshall III doing the honors for trainer Donna Marshall, \"Sam\" found the front from post position four. He stepped around pole-sitter Five Carat Diamond (Pat Berry), then tip-toed through tepid fractions of :30.2, :59.3 and 1:28.3.
Barely sweating, \"Sam\" owned a 1 1/2-lead into the lane. He was a measured length better than second-choice Night\'s Jazz (Jeff Gregory) in 1:59, with Marina Grace (Jim Marohn) third. Five Carat Diamond and Holleypop (Greg Grismore) earned the minorest of spoils.
Drill Sergeaant Sam, a 5-year-old Malabar Man gelding co-owned by Peter and Murray Goldberg and Michael Seidman, returned $4 for his second win in four seasonal starts. He led an $11.20 exacta and $59 triple. Fresh from a career-best $60,000 season in 2007, \"Sam\" saw his career cash exced $135,000. (Yonkers)
