The Record newspaper of northern New Jersey had reporters at this year's Hambletonian and interviewed those in the crowd about the plans for the track's present grandstand to be demolished and a smaller facility to be built. Many of those interviewed expressed a fondness for the building, and all spoke of how the Hambletonian is an annual event on their social calendar.
On Saturday a crowd of 25,354 turned out for the Hambletonian program, down from 26,712 in 2010. Wagering on the 15-race card was $8,290,672, with betting from Italy not yet reported. Handle for last year's card was $8,391,600, the third highest in harness racing history. Only the $9 million handled on the 2005 Hambo card and the $8.8 million bet on the 2002 Hambo program rank higher.
