After two setbacks as the favorite, Ron Pierce piloted For The Ladies N to an impressive 1:52.3 triumph in the $18,000 Mares Open Handicap Pace on Monday at Dover Downs.
Pierce not only guided For The Ladies N to her first win of 2015 in the female feature, he also drove Scootin For Joy to victory in the secondary feature, the $13,500 mares winners-over pace. The winners are both owned by Harry von Knoblauch and trained by Peter Tritton.
For The Ladies N got away next to last in the six-distaff field. Pierce worked his way up on the outside to within a length of pace setting race favorite Kiss Dont Bite and Vic Kirby. By mid-stretch For The Ladies N, a daughter of Jereme's Jet-For The Don, was rolling and picked up her 14th career victory, upping her lifetime earnings to $90,809. Mach A Wish was a game second for Corey Callahan while Kiss Dont Bite edged Handsoffmycookie (Trace Tetrick) for third.
The same owner, trainer and driver combination of von Knoblauch, Tritton and Pierce struck in the previous race when Pierce scooted down the passing lane with Scootin For Joy, a Western Paradise-Scooting Annie 5 year old, to overtake leader Jeremes Sweetheart (Kirby) for a 1:54 score. Paradise Lost (Jonathan Roberts) closed strongly to finish third.
Pierce and Allan Davis both had four wins, while Trace Tetrick had two winners. Meet leader Corey Callahan won one race, his 101st of the meet, to bring his career win total to 3,998. (Dover Downs)
