A racing rarity occurred in the first race at Monticello Raceway on Thursday afternoon when Freedom Fry, a pacer driven by Jimmy Marohn Jr., finished third and paid a whopping $150 for each $2 show ticket.

The race was won by Wise Guy, driven by the track\'s leading driver, Jimmy Devaux, in a time of 2:02. He paid $13.60 for win; $6.50 for place and $35.40 for show. The second-place finisher, Jaccamo, returned $8.20 for place and $60.50 for show.

What made the payoffs even more unusual was that it occurred in a  six-horse race, although the reason was that the 2-5 favorite Half Life finished fourth and off the board.

However, as huge as the show payoff price  was it still wasn’t a track record. The biggest show payoff ever at Monticello Raceway was a $219 return by a horse named Sheepshead Bay on Dec. 27, 1998. (Monticello)
