Harness racing’s all-time richest pacer Gallo Blue Chip won a star-studded qualifier at Mohawk Racetrack Friday morning (May 21), holding off Mystic Marauder, who last raced in March in a $48,000(C) claimer, by a nose in 1:52.4. Finishing third—although 9 ¼ lengths behind the winner--was 2003 Meadowlands Pace winner Allamerican Theory, who has been on the shelf with various ailments. Another three lengths back in fourth was 2003 Fan Hanover winner Remember When, who was making her second qualifying appearance of the year.

Gallo Blue Chip was driven by Luc Ouellette in the wire-to-wire victory, his first after two previous qualifying attempts at Mohawk where he finished second and fourth, the latter in which he made a break early. Mark Ford trains for owner Martin Scharf.

The Bob McIntosh-trained 3-year-old filly pacer Special Magic, who earned more than $280,000(C) last year at two, won her second straight qualifier, this time in 1:57. Another of McIntosh’s sophomore filly brigade, Los Angeles, finished second in a qualifier, race-timed in 1:56.4.

The 3-year-old filly pacer Allamerican Coco, who concluded her freshman campaign with a fifth-place finish in the Breeders Crown final for trainer McIntosh, won her qualifier for driver Steve Condren in 1:55.4, which was two-fifths of a second better than her career mark.

The veteran trotter Springtop, driven by Lyle MacArthur, held off Mr. Eero and driver Trevor Ritchie by 1 ½ lengths in 1:57 in their qualifier.
