Gov. was racing's friend

Former Kentucky Gov. Edward "Ned" Breathitt Jr., a friend of harness racing in Kentucky during his term as governor from 1963 to 1967, died late Tuesday night (Oct. 14) at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington. He was 78.



Mr. Breathitt was also a close personal friend of the late Frederick Van Lennep, who owned Castleton Farm, The Red Mile and Tattersalls, and Pompano Park. For several years after Mr. Van Lennep's death, Mr. Breathitt served as a trustee of the Frederick L. Van Lennep estate.
