On Monday, Aug. 31, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky announced his intention to introduce and support the Horse Racing Integrity & Safety Act to the U.S. Senate.
This newly-minted legislation is a revision of earlier versions and was presented at a Keeneland-hosted press conference by McConnell along with Kentucky Congressman Andy Barr and top ranking officials from Churchill Downs Inc., Keeneland and the Breeders' Cup.
The Thoroughbred industry strongly supports the proposal with track management, horsemen's associations, WHOA and many high-profile trainers on record as being proponents of the proposed legislation.
"I feel it is vitally important that we get behind this legislation and I believe that the stated concerns of the USTA can be addressed to their satisfaction as the language is shaped," said Meadowlands president Jeff Gural. "We all know the current system does not work. The is our best chance to have effective regulation of integrity related matters in harness racing." (Meadowlands)
