Hazel Park Raceway, which held its first harness meet in 1953 but has hosted only Thoroughbred racing the past few years, announced Thursday morning that it was closing, effective immediately.
Hazel Park was scheduled to open its Thoroughbred meet on Friday, May 4, which it had been promoting on social media. The track was also promoting its annual Kentucky Derby festivities for the following afternoon. The Thoroughbred horsemen were informed of the closing on Wednesday morning. Employees at the track did not learn the news until Thursday.
Sources have told harnessracing.com that the track has been sold, with plans calling for the site to be bulldozed.
A remembrance of Hazel Park, written by Gordon Waterstone, who worked at the track from 1979-1996, will be in this week's HarnessRacing Weekend Preview that will be available later Thursday afternoon.
