The Horseracing and Integrity Act (HISA) is again the featured topic in the latest HarnessRacing Weekend Preview. Last week USTA president Russell Williams offered his thoughts on HISA in an interview. This week Andrew Cohen, a breeder, owner and media legal analyst, questions the USTA’s effort to be involved with crafting HISA and pleads for the organization to work to be included when HISA is implemented. USTA executive vice president Mike Tanner answers two questions Cohen posed to him, including one that asks Tanner how much effort the USTA put into trying to collaborate with the Jockey Club (which also has a statement) on the bill. Jeff Gural, the chairman of the Meadowlands, Vernon Downs and Tioga Downs, and also a breeder and owner, also pleads for cooperation.
Last Saturday night the Meadowlands handled $4.5 million and the track has another competitive card and is one of only five harness tracks racing in North America on Saturday night. The others are Cal Expo, Freehold, Miami Valley and Northfield. Weekend Preview has stories about a couple of contenders at the Meadowlands over the weekend.
