HP Paque and driver Brian Sears captured the $800,000 Breeders Crown Open Trot at the Meadowlands Saturday night in a career-best 1:52.2.

War Paint and driver John Campbell had set the fractions of :27.2, :55 and 1:23 before going offstride at the top of the stretch. Sears, sitting second with HP Paque, took the lead but it appeared he may get passed by Elegant Man and Cat Manzi, but that one also went offstride. That left HP Paque alone to trot to the wire first, with Legendary Lover K (Mike Lachance) closing for second, with Bebop (Smedshammer) third.

Earlier this year HP Paque swept the Su Mac Lad Series before traveling overseas where his last start in Sweden's Elitlopp resulted in a fifth-place finish. Trainer Trond Smedshammer brought HP Paque back to the United States and the Crown win came in his third attempt.

A 7-year-old son of Tabor Lobell, HP Paque is owned by Timo Panula and August Frederik Miedel. He boosted his lifetime earnings to $1,468,498 with the victory.
