Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed Senate Bill 690, the gaming legislation recently approved by legislators, into law on Friday, June 28. The state's tracks are now authorized to host slot machines and other casino-style games for the purpose of generating additional revenue to boost purses.
On its website, the Illinois Harness Horsemen’s Association (IHHA) stated it "applauds the signing of gaming legislation by Governor Pritzker today. The legislation will revolutionize and reinvigorate horse racing in Illinois leading to the creation of thousands of new agriculture jobs."
Illinois horsemen have fought for years for casino-style gaming at racetracks which has been used by other horse racing states to boost purses and revive the breeding industry. Over the years, Illinois harness racing has been decimated, with purses declining and horsemen leaving the state.
