Indiana Horse Racing Commission director to retire

Although an official date has not been set, Indiana Horse Racing Commission executive director Mike Smith recently announced plans to retire.

Smith will assist Commission members with their search for his replacement and ensure a smooth transition occurs once a replacement is named.

Since joining the ranks of the Commission as its executive director in 2016, Smith has continued the Commission’s goal to maintain the highest integrity for Indiana’s racing along with fostering and promoting an environment that encourages investment and growth of Indiana’s horse racing program.

“Deciding to retire has not been an easy decision to make, especially when working in an industry which I have grown so passionate about. However, I’m looking forward to spending time with family and focusing on my existing business ventures,” noted Smith on his impending retirement.

“I believe I can speak for the entire industry in saying Mike’s departure will certainly leave big shoes to fill. His leadership skills have fostered an environment of open communication and consideration for the benefit of all sectors within our industry,” noted Commission chairman Dr. Phil Borst.

The Indiana Horse Racing Commission will be accepting applications through May 24 to fill the role of executive director. The executive director must have a background in the horse industry, a high level of management skills and previous experience with pari-mutuel horse betting administration. The executive director is appointed by the Commission and shall:

• Carryout the policy and program directives of the Indiana Horse Racing Commission to ensure the highest level of integrity along with actively promoting and growing Indiana’s racing program;
• Possess extensive executive level experience in leadership and communication skills necessary to successfully communicate with commission, staff and all sectors of the horse racing industry and public;
• Manage appropriate organizational structures and personnel policies as approved by the IHRC and Indiana State Personnel and be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the IHRC;
• Perform all other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Commission.
