Jerseylicious won just one race in seven starts last year but it was a biggie--the $263,800 Sweetheart final for 2-year-old filly pacers. She didn't waste any time in 2013 as she won her seasonal debut Tuesday at Dover Downs, capturing the opening race on the card with a 1:53.1 victory for driver Corey Callahan and owners Pam Curran and Legacy Racing of DE. The win was one of six on the day for Callahan, the leading driver in North America in both victories and purse earnings.
Another Callahan win came with Artstanding, who appears to be getting better with age. The 10 year old turned in a lifetime-fastest 1:50.4 to win the $20,000 claiming pace. Artstanding won his third in a row and fifth in his last six starts.
The son of Artsplace-Jasmine Hanover has only started 54 times in his career, but has won 13 races earned $681,477 lifetime. Standardbred Ventures Claimed Artstanding two weeks ago for $15,000. It was the second time in a month that trainer Dylan Davis has had the pacer in his stable. A 54-1 shot Aiden's Artist (Allan Davis) closed to finish second with Pike Hanover (Eddie Davis Jr.) third.
Callahan drove another streaking winner, Josh Green's Lislea Miles, in 1:57 for the veteran gelding's fifth consecutive and sixth win in his last seven races. He also scored with Dolly and Shaun Callahan's Rockin Gazelle in 1:55, while win number five came directing trotter, Pegasus Blue Chip, owned by Dawn Gannon, Yannick Gingras and Frank Canzone, in 1:55. Callahan concluded his six-bagger guiding Chris Short's Phranque to a 1:53.2 score. (with files from Dover Downs)
