The New Jersey Bergen Record website has reported that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has indicatedhe might sign legislation for a purse supplement for horse racing even though he is opposed to any supplements or subsidies.
“Listen, there are things that we amend all the time,” Christie said, referring to a bill that creates an Atlantic City Tourism District, but also provides the horsemen a total of $30 million in purse subsidies for three years. “And negotiations have a way of ironing things out.”

Senate President Stephen Sweeney was a prime sponsor of the bill and has been adamant that the state's horse racing industry needs bridge funding--which would include a purse supplement from some part of the casino industry--so the horse racing-related jobs are preserved.
