Trainer Kent Sherman and driver Ryan Stahl unveiled another outstanding trotting lass on Monday at Scioto Downs when Jessica Action won a division of the Ohio Sire Stakes by six lengths in 2:01.2.
Two years ago Sherman and Stahl campaigned the freshman filly Jesse’s Messsenger, a daughter of Jailhouse Jesse like Jessica Action, to an unbeaten season and honors as Ohio Horse of the Year. Both Jessica Action and Jesse’s Messenger are owned by Daryl Sherman of Elmore, Ohio.
Stahl sent Jessica Action to the front at the start of the race and never looked back. The bay filly, sent off as a 4-5 favorite, eased through an evenly-rated mile to easily defeat Lady At Bat and Jumpin Jesse.
All six of the starters stayed on gait the entire mile.
Stahl also drove Special Lady D to a pacesetting triumph in the first division of the Ohio Sire Stakes freshman pacing fillies. The daughter of Stand Forever scored by 1 1/2 lengths over Kates Beer Bunny and Moon Goddess.
Special Lady D is trained by Brian Brown for Country Club Acres, Daniel Wozniak, and William J. Robinson. She tripped the timer in 1:56.3.
The other division of the freshman filly pace went to Rivervalleprincess and driver Kayne Kauffman in a close decision over Feelin Rosie in 1:57.3.
Rivervalleprincess left alertly from post six, then yielded to favored Airie Feelin and Dan Noble. Mark Winters moved Feelin Rosie to the front entering the final quarter, but Rivervalleprincess launched her attack in the stretch and prevailed by a neck. Feelin Rosie was second and Friskie Flicker overcame a break at the start to get third.
The winner, trained by Tom Blankenship for Gerald M. Weiler, paid $19 to win.
The second split of OSS action for first-season trotting distaffers went to Jessica Rayne, a Jailhouse Jesse filly, that caught pacesetting Vada Victory in the final quarter to ease away to a 3 1/2-length win for driver Dan Noble. Virgil Morgan Jr. trains for Matthew A. Toler and C. Ed Mullinax. She was clocked in 2:00.1. (Scioto Downs)
