Joanne Nickells, the wife of horseman Bruce Nickells and mother of trainer-driver Brooke Nickells, died Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis at the age of 73. Mrs. Nickells had been in poor health for many months, but until three weeks ago had been going to the barn in the mornings and the races in the evening.

Mrs. Nickells was married to her husband for more than 50 years and together they traveled the Grand Circuit, raising their two children, daughter Brooke and son Sep. She was often at the barn in the morning and at the racetrack when the Nickells Stable horses raced.

According to her daughter, Mrs. Nickells also enjoyed gardening, serving as president of her gardening club in the Fort Lauderdale area, and shopping for antiques.

Mrs. Nickells requested that she be cremated. Her family plans to hold a memorial service for her at Indiana Downs in the coming weeks.

Cards may be sent to the Nickells family in care of Brooke Nickells, 6021 E. 75th St. Apt A-2, Indianapolis, IN  46250
