Just The Beginning fastest in Valedictory opener

Heavily favored Mr. Saratoga was an easy gate-to-wire winner in one of three $18,000 divisions in Saturday night\'s opening round of the Valedictory Pacing Series for 3-year-old colt and gelding pacers at Woodbine Racetrack.

The victory was the third in a row for the son of Million Dollar Cam-Miss Sara Toga and improved his record to nine wins in 10 starts in his first season at the races for onlineharnessowner 7 of Uxbridge, Ont. and trainer Marty Fine.

Mr. Saratoga scored by 1 1/2 lengths for driver Jody Jamieson, pacing his final quarter in :26.3. Hide The Cash finished second while Dedalos grabbed the show spot.

Clowns Smile also delivered as the overwhelming favorite in the second split for driver Roger Mayotte in 1:55.1.

The son of Grinfromeartoear-Brain Child scored by a similar margin over Ciroc and Haverford Hanover and extended his current win streak to three for owners Steve Calhoun, Mike Lindley and Ellis Bryant Inc.

Just The Begrining was also heavily backed in third division and did not disappoint with a sharp 1:54.1 win, the fastest of the opening-round splits. It was the second Valedictory win of the night for driver Jamieson.

The son of Grinfromeartoear-Village Blues, trained by Mike Brealey, was 1 1/2 lengths better than Real Energy and Great Integrity. It was the fifth win of the season for the colt who is owned by Brealey along with Canamerica Capital Corp. and David Ramsay. (WEG)
