The Kentucky Horse Racing Authority (KHRA) has announced it will draft and adopt rules regulating the use of anabolic steroids in racehorses in the Bluegrass State. At an Authority meeting on Monday, KHRA executive director Lisa Underwood said that although there is no time frame to adopt the rule—or close to the rule—put forth by the Association of Racing Commissioners International and Racing Medication and Testing Consortium, she hopes the process will not take long.

The rules will first go before the Kentucky Equine Drug Research Council before being returned to the KHRA. The Kentucky Legislative Research Commission would then get the rules if they have been approved. Underwood stated industry members such as trainers and veterinarians will be asked to help formulate the rule.
