Kentucky state senator David Williams, who has been adamantly opposed to any expansion of gaming at Kentucky racetracks, has announced that he is running for governor in 2011, and that his running mate will be Richie Farmer, the state's current Commissioner of Agriculture and a former University of Kentucky basketball player during the Rick Pitino era. Farmer was a starting guard on the popular 1992 team dubbed "The Unforgettables."
Williams, 57, and Farmer, 41, who has been elected Commissioner of Agriculture twice, are considered a serious threat to incumbent Democratic governor Steve Beshear, who has already announced that he will seek re-election, but with a new running mate. Beshear has lined up Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson for his ticket.
