Horseman Angus Lake was sentenced Thursday to nine years in prison as a result of a drunk-driving crash that killed 25-year-old Michelle Eustis one year ago on the Balmoral Park backstretch. The Chicago Tribune reported that moments before Lake heard his sentence by a Will County Court judge, he apologized to the family of Eustis, including her father, trainer Chuck Eustis.

Chuck Eustis told The Tribune that he did not accept the apology. "She's gone. That nine years don't bring her back."

According to police reports, Lake was driving drunk at about 50 mph--more than twice the posted speed limit--on the Balmoral backstretch at approximately 4 a.m. when his truck hit a horse that Eustis and fellow caretaker, Heather France, were riding, throwing them to the ground. France suffered severe injuries while Eustis died shortly afterward. The horse sustained only minor injuries. Lake's alcohol blood level was reportedly .147.
