Ontario’s 2-year-old pacing fillies treated Windsor Raceway fans to an outstanding finish in their fourth $130,000 Gold Final on Sunday evening.
As the eight fillies rolled away from the starting gate, groans were heard around the grandstand as fan favorite Apogee Hanover skipped offstride from post 2. That left Mindsweeper with a clear path to the front from post 1 and the filly fired out to a :27 opening quarter for driver Sylvain Filion.
Mindsweeper continued to lead at the :57 half, but Luc Ouellette had tipped Legal Entity to the outside and local favorite Class Of O Nine and driver Randy Waples were hot on their heels. Legal Entity loomed large at the three-quarters, but Mindsweeper was able to fend her off and still enjoyed a one and one-quarter length lead as she rounded the turn for home.
That lead came to a rapid end, however, as Ouellette and Waples aimed their mounts at the wire. Legal Entity and Class Of O Nine waged a fierce battle to the finish, and it was Legal Entity who got a nose in front to score the 1:53.3 victory. Cooking The Books followed the battling leaders up the outside into third, just ahead of YS Gold Star. Apogee Hanover had to settle for the fifth-place share of the $130,000 purse, three lengths behind the winner.
Bob Hamather bred and owns Legal Entity, who is a third generation product of his breeding program. The Modern Art daughter is the first foal of Legal Wish, whose mother Legal Theory is a half-sister to Hamather’s super-producer No No Abby.
Shawn Robinson trains Legal Entity, who boasts a freshman record of three wins, three seconds and two thirds from nine starts. Sunday’s triumph was her first in Ontario Sires Stakes action, through a season that has seen her try her hand at both the Grassroots and Gold Series programs.
Legal Entity and Ouellette will be looking to retain their Gold Final title when the two-year-old pacing fillies wrap up their regular season at Woodbine Racetrack on Oct. 7 and 14. From there the top 10 point earners will prepare for the Nov. 12 Super Final. Legal Entity currently ranks second in the point standings behind Class Of O Nine and is already assured of a berth in the $300,000 season finale. (Ontario Sire Stakes)
