Let’s Drink On It co-owner Hal Hewitt dies

Hal H. Hewitt, 82, husband of Phyllis B. Hewitt, passed away Monday, March 23, at his home surrounded by his family.

A Standardbred owner for more than 17 years, Mr. Hewitt's well-known horses he shared ownership in included Let's Drink On It, who took a mark of 1:48.3 and had earnings of $851,927. In 2014, Let's Drink On It won his Little Brown Jug elimination and then finished second in the final.
 
He also shared ownership in top fillies Beachy Girl, who in 2017 won divisions of the Bluegrass and International Stallion Stakes in back-to-back efforts of 1:51, her career best, and A Perfect Jenna. Every horse Mr. Hewitt owned was trained by Joe Seekman.
 
He was born in Allegan, Mich. on Dec. 12, 1937, to the late Charles A. and Betty Counterman Hewitt. Hal was a graduate of Otsego High School and a 1960 graduate of Michigan Tech where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He was an Eagle Scout, and for 32 years worked as a mechanical engineer for Clark.
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan Baldwin Hewitt. Hal will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Phyllis Britton Hewitt, sister, Kay (Roger) Henrickson, (MI), son, Eric (Linda) Hewitt, (MI), daughter, Dawn Hewitt, (AL), bonus daughters Lesley (Sam) Lawson, (KY), Sarah (Wes) Dickerson, (KY), grandchildren, Joshua (Hannah) Hewitt, Seith (Amanda) Hewitt, Jamie Hewitt, Nicole Roberts, Addison Lawson, Morgan Lawson, John Mac Dickerson, Samuel Dickerson, and Emma Dickerson.
 
Due to current gathering restrictions, a private graveside service will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego and a memorial service at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research at PO Box 5014 Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014 or the Woodford Humane Society at PO Box 44 Versailles, KY 40383.
