Longtime Kentucky-based Standardbred breeder and owner Dr. Luel Overstreet has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chamber of Commerce of Henderson, Ky.

Dr. Overstreet grew up in south-central Kentucky on a farm that didn't have electricity until 1950, according to the Evansville Courier And Press. He later attended Eastern Kentucky University, graduating in three years. He then went to Auburn University's veterinary school.

He began working at Kentucky's Audubon Raceway in 1967 for $150 a week, which was his first exposure to harness racing. He soon bought an interest in an animal clinic and then a farm, purchasing four stallions and 10 broodmares. He subsequently built a training track on the farm, where he still resides.

Over his decades in racing, Dr. Overstreet has bred four world champions. He was named Kentucky Horseman of the Year in 1990 and was inducted into the Kentucky Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.
