Patrons at Saratoga Gaming and Raceway probably weren't sure if they were betting the races or playing the slots Wednesday night (May 26) when the evening's first harness race was in the books. Bettors of Alpine Lightning must have thought they lined up three sevens on a slot machine when the 3-year-old trotter won and lit up the board at odds of 107-1, returning a hefty $216 for a $2 win bet.

Owned by Edward Gilligan and trained and driven by Brian Walker in his 2:04.4 victory in a non-winners of a pari-mutuel race conditioned event, Alpine Lightning is a son of Mogul Monster-Proud To Be. Unraced at two, Alpine Lightning was making his second start of 2004. In his debut on May 16, he finished sixth at odds of 16-1.

In his victory, Alpine Lightning got a two-hole trip after leaving from the seven post. He defeated 9-5 favorite Kick Asphalt (John Stark Jr.) by 1 1/2 lengths, with Say Elaine (Kim Crawford) third.
