Lucan Hanover used a late kick in the stretch to mow down the leaders and win the $250,000 Anthony Abbatiello SBOA New Jersey Classic final at the Meadowlands in a lifetime best 1:48.3. Driven by David Miller for trainer Casie Coleman, the Western Ideal gelding collected his fourth straight win. Emeritus Maximus raced second and Rockin Amadeus rounded out the trifecta.
Leading the field through a :26.1 first quarter, Word Power and Jim Morrill were shuffled by Wake Up Peter, driven by Ron Pierce. But that wouldn’t last long, as Word Power would retake command on the way to a :53.4 half. Rockin Amadeus, third early for Yannick Gingras, challenged on the backstretch for trainer Jimmy Takter. The colt raced first over and taking a slim lead on the way to three quarters (1:21.1).
Turning for home, Miller had his gelding primed and ready. In the stretch the sophomore closed on the leaders with every stride, circling the group and pacing to his sixth win in 10 seasonal starts. Bred by Hanover Shoe Farms and owned by West Wins Stable and Christine Calhoun, Lucan Hanover has won half of his 14 lifetime starts. The victory pushes his career earnings to more than $210,000.
