Mark MacDonald, the Prince Edward Island native who has made his mark in Ontario and also this year on the North American scene, has been selectedthe sport's Rising Star in the trainer-driver category in balloting by the directors of the U.S. Harness Writers Association.

MacDonald, 27, served warning of his sulky prowess in 2004 by posting 499 victories and making his presence well-known on the tough Toronto circuit while also doing well at Ontario ovals Western Fair and Flamboro. But this is the year that everything has come to the fore, with MacDonald among the top three drivers in North America with 680-plus victories, and establishing himself as a man taking a back seat to no one on the Woodbine/Mohawk circuit.

MacDonald also made the record books in 2005 while behind the fast 3-year-old American Ideal. When American Ideal and MacDonald won at Lexington in 1:47.4 during Grand Circuit, the time was the fastest ever posted by a sophomore in harness racing history.
