Maltese Artist outgamed Town Champion down the stretch Saturday night at the Meadowlands to capture the $122,000 Four Leaf Clover Series final. With Ron Pierce driving, Maltese Artist won in a stakes-record 1:49.3, edging Town Champion by three-quarters of a length.

Eric Ledford was in the bike behind Town Champion as he took the lead past the opening :26.4 quarter, leading through a half of :54.2 and 1:21.3. Pierce ranged up first-over with Maltese Artist and was able to slip back to the rail when Town Champion's stablemate Fox Valley Gallant went offstride approaching the three-quarters.

Yannick Gingras moved JK Royal Flush into position at the top of the stretch but that one tired, leaving room for Pierce to guide Maltese Artist off the pylons. With a late surge Maltese Artist went past Town Champion for the victory.

Owned by Leon, Howard and Koran and trained by Mickey Burke, Maltese Artist is a 4-year-old son of Artiscape. The win was his third in seven starts this year to go along with three seconds. He now sporst career earnings of nearly $350,000.
