Dexter Dunn sent Manchego to the lead and didn’t look back, winning the $186,000 Dr. John R. Steele Memorial TVG free-for-all for trotting mares, sponsored by Steele and Associates, in a stakes record 1:50. The former Hambletonian Oaks champion was followed under the wire by Hannelore Hanover with Darlin Mearas S trotting third.

Drawing the rail, Dunn pushed Manchego to the lead with a :26 first quarter as Hannelore Hanover slotted in behind in second. The four-year-old Muscle Hill-Secret Magic mare continued to command the field through fractions of :55.2 and 1:23.1 as Darling Mearas S led the first-over charge that included Ice Attraction and Custom Cantab.

In the lane, Hannelore Hanover and Custom Cantab made bids on the outside, but each ran out of racetrack as Manchego finished the mile with a :26.4 last quarter to equal her lifetime best. Trained by Nancy Johansson for Black Horse Racing, the mare collected her second win in seven seasonal starts. The victory, the 21st of her career, left her just shy of $1.7 million in earnings. Manchego was bred by Brittany Farms and paid $3.80, $2.40 and $2.20.
