Mary Artman scores third straight at Pompano

Mary Artman ($10.20) took advantage of a miscue in deep stretch by pacesetter Stonebridge Capri in posting her third straight win with a 1:54.2 triumph at the isle pompano park Friday.
The 9th race feature pace saw Mary Artman and driver Wally Hennessey go right to the lead with Splenda (Eric Irving) grabbing the pocket-seat in second place by the opening quarter mile in :27.4. But that lead was short lived as driver Bruce Ranger quarter moved with Stonebridge Capri and they shot right to the front and cut the mile to the half in :57.2.
Then in the backstretch, Irving came first-over with Splenda to challenge past the three-quarter mile marker in 1:25.3 but they could not collar Stonebridge Capri. Then in the stretch it looked as if Ranger and Stonebridge Capri were home free when the mare went off-stride and Mary Artman and Hennessey had little trouble winning by two open lengths. Wilma Hall (Daryl Bier) was second with Splenda being placed third.
It was the fourth win this year for Mary Artman, a five-year-old mare by Artsplace, who is trained by Michile Lorenzo and co-owned by Rod Lorenzo of Deerfield Beach and Souren Hovsepian of Palm Beach. (Pompano Park)
