Great Challenger set a track record in winning the first of two Matron elims for 2-year-old trotting colts Sunday (Nov. 2) at Dover Downs. Great Challenger turned in a 1:56.4 effort for driver David Miller and trainer Jim Campbell. The second elim went to Self Obsessed in 1:58.4.

The elim won by Great Challenger (a colt sired by Conway Hall) included world record holder Uncle Vernon, who suffered interference and finished fifth. Tennis Champ, trained and driven by Trond Smedshammer, finished second. American Mike, a colt Smedshammer trained earlier in the year, took third and Solomon Blue Chip, another Smedshammer pupil, was fourth.

Self Obsessed, a colt by Hambletonian winner Self Possessed, got back on the winning track. He had taken a mark of 1:57.3 at the Meadowlands early in the summer but had failed to win another race until the Matron elim.
