Meadowlands handle, starter numbers

The Meadowlands finished its 2011 winter harness meet Saturday, March 26, with an average all-source handle of $2,302,751. Total all source common pool handle for the meet was $76.8 million, with another $3.79 million coming in from separate pool wagering from Australia and New Zealand.
 
Without the Australasian handle included from the 15 cards simulcast Down Under, the average all-source handle for common-pool wagering was $2,194,465.
 
The 2011 meet had 35 days of live racing versus 54 from January-March in 2010. Handle for the same period last year averaged $2,354,428. Simply comparing the average handles, the 2011 meet posted a decline of 2.2 percent with Australia-New Zealand handle included, or 6.8 percent without that handle.
 
Total handle for 2011 meet dropped 40 percent from 2010 handle for the 54 dates from January-March 2010. The 2010 handle was $127.1 million versus this year's $76.8 million.
 
In 2011 the Meadowlands harness featured 403 races, or an average of 11.5 per day for the 35 days of racing. In 2010 the track's January through March calendar included 626 races, or 11.6 per day. Field size in 2011 was 9.06 starters per race versus 9.24 starters during the first three months of 2010.
 
In addition, handle on Meadowlands races at the track dropped five percent. Also of note, in-house simulcasting on other races--including Thoroughbred signals--was down about five percent through March 26.
