Jenny Melander, riding Sand Top Gun, won a racing under saddle "monte" race Sunday afternoon at The Red Mile. The one-mile race, which carried a purse of $20,000, was contested as a non-wagering event between the fifth and sixth races on the card. All 12 starters in the race lined up on the gate.
Melander left from post eight with Sand Top Gun and found good early position. She was able to edge past the Therese Lundgren-ridden Take My Picture in the final strides to cross the wire in 2:00 flat. Anita Valstad, riding Angel Eyes Hanover, finished third.
A 7-year-old gelded son of Conway Hall, Sand Top Gun is trained by Tyler Raymer for owners Helane and Harold Solomon and Stephen Moss.
The purse money for the race came from the following sponsors: Walnut Hall Ltd.; Diamond Creek Farm; Cane Run Farm; Arden Homestead; Blue Chip Farms; Bluestone Farms; and Valley High Stable.
