Although the lights around the five-eighths mile oval at Miami Valley Gaming & Racing were on all day long, at about 6:05 pm the power to the entire facility just north of Cincinnati began to fail and the lights dimmed. The facility has backup generators, but due to technical problems they weren't powering the lights to full force, which left the track in shadows in spots and required the cancellation of the opening night of racing.
A crowd of about 1,000 people filled the racing room and waited through several announcements which addressed the reason for the delay. Facility engineers switched the power from the primary source to generators, which caused the entire building to go dark, including video lottery terminals, and while generators then kicked in and the lights came back on in the building, some lighting surrounding the racing oval did not come on. At 8 pm Miami Valley officials announced that racing for the night was cancelled and customers would be given $10 food vouchers for a future visit. The races carded for Friday night were moved to next Wednesday.
With Duke Energy trucks and personnel on the grounds, Miami Valley officials announced that they hoped the power problem would be solved so Saturday's program could be raced as scheduled.
