Mich. gaming on Nov. ballot

August 24, 2004

The Michigan Board of State Canvassers voted unanimously Monday to approve more than 443,000 petition signatures for a ballot measure that will place the issue of expanded gaming in the state before the state's voters in November. The decision is a setback to the state's racetracks, which had challenged the petition's language by saying it was misleading and could confuse voters.

If the amendment is approved, any proposed additional gaming, including at the state's seven racetracks, would require the approval of the state's voters as well as a majority of votes in the township or city in which it is planned.

According to the Lansing State Journal newspaper, Hazel Park Raceway vice president Dan Adkins said that track would file a lawsuit challenging the decision.
