Michigan horseman George Davis dies

Veteran horseman George Davis, inducted into the Michigan Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 2001, died Tuesday in Ann Arbor. He was 70. Mr. Davis is the father of horseman Steve Davis and Julie Austin, the wife of Ontario-based trainer Mark Austin.
 
Mr. Davis was a 1957 graduate of Fowlerville High School, a veteran of the U.S. Army. He married Rose Daley on June 25, 1966.
 
Mr. Davis's better known horses include the $200,000-plus winner Port Sail and Mighty Sail, as well as the $50,000-winner Sail Admiral.
 
Besides his son and daughter, Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Rose; grandchildren, Paige and Paula Austin; a sister, Helen Brown; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Jr., Arnold and LaVerne, and a sister, Winifred Jones.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Niblack Funeral Home, Dillingham Liverance Chapel in Fowlerville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fowlerville Family Impact Center or Gleaners Food Bank.
