Michigan owner Larry Gary dies at 92

Lawrence M. Gary, 92, of Ada, Mich., who was buying yearlings at last year's sales, died Sunday, Dec. 7.
Born Jan. 1, 1922, in Wheaton, Ill., Mr. Gary was graduated from Wheaton High in 1941 and attended Wheaton College. He was a decorated World War II veteran, serving in both the European and Pacific Theaters in the 86th Blackhawk division. He married the late Joan C. Gary (Casey) in 1947 and they resided in Hastings, Mich., before relocating to Ada in 1962, when Mr. Gary founded his successful beer distributorship, Kent Beverage. He retired in 1991, but his dream continues to thrive and grow, now as Alliance Beverage Distributing.
Also known as Little Red, Pappa Joe, Boss or Bumpa, Mr. Gary loved raising and racing his horses and always looked forward to his annual Canadian fishing trips.
He is survived by his children, Kevin (Sandra) of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Kim (Pam) of Rockford, Mich., Shawn (Linda) of Grand Rapids Twp., Mich., Brian (Melissa) of Ada, Bridget Gary-Jackson of Rockford, Shannon (Molly) Gary of Cascade Twp., Mich.; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Edward (Mary) and James; and family friend Angela (Pat) Scripps.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday 11:00 a.m. at St. Robert of Newminster, 6477 Ada Dr., Ada, Rev. Leonard Sudlik and Rev. R. Louis Stasker con-celebrants. Interment Findlay Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday 6-8:00 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4:00 p.m. and 6-8:00 p.m. at O'Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd. S.E., Grand Rapids. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Spectrum Health Hospice, 100 Michigan St. NE Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
