Michigan owner Steve Serges dies at 88

Longtime Michigan-based Standardbred owner and breeder Steve Serges died on Tuesday, Sept. 5. He was 88.
Mr. Serges was born on Dec. 28, 1928, in Flushing, Mich. He graduated from Flushing High School in 1948.
He married the love of his life, Donna Lee Gullifor, Aug. 17, 1953, in Angola, Ind. She preceded him in death on July 1, 1989.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955.

His daughters were his world. He was a man full of wisdom and always giving advice to whomever needed it.

Mr. Serges enjoyed horse racing and spending time at the casino where he made many friends and enjoyed his social time with everyone. He was a very successful businessman who passed on all of his wisdom to his daughters, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He devoted his life to the happiness of his family.
Mr. Serges owned hundreds of horses over the years, many in partnership with Harvey Eisman. Included among Mr. Serges' most successful horses were Michigan champion Time To Cash, Jef's Gladiator, Joss and Frilly One.
"Steve and I have been partners in the jewelry store, pawn shop and with horses for more than 40 years and we never had an argument," said Eisman. "He was just one great guy."
Mr. Serges is survived by his daughters, Toni (Steve) Sleva, Kellie Brindley, Dana (Matthew) Ferris, and Brenda (Wade) McDermaid; grandchildren, Ashlee, Stevie, Brandi, Brittney, Brett, Chase, Devin, Austin, and Wade Jr.; great-grandchildren, Kaden, Brindley, Brooklyn, Gianni, Giselle, Gia, and Bo; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Hewas also preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Tillie Serges; sisters, Fannie, Jeanie, and Anna; and brothers, George, Julius, and Henry. Special thanks to dear friends Harvey Eisman and Nick Sasseen for their endearing friendship.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to everyone for their thoughts and prayers.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 W. Silver Lake Rd., Fenton, Mich. Interment will follow at Flint Memorial Park, Mt. Morris. Visitation will be held from 12-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at Sharp Funeral Home.
