A story in Wednesday's (March 31) Detroit Free Press quoted a spokesman for the State Senate Majority Leader as saying he expected a bill that would allow the introduction of video lottery machines at the state's racetracks to be soon approved by a Senate committee and go before the full Senate. The spokesman for Ken Sikkema added that backers of the bill believed they had the necessary 20 Senate votes to pass the measure on the Senate floor.

The story also reported that a Detroit-area group of African-American businessmen have talked to Michigan Racing Commissioner Robert Geake about the possibility of building a new racetrack in Highland Park, which is a city that actually sits inside the city of Detroit. There are already four new racetrack applications before the commissioner in the state, including one by Magna Entertainment Corp.
