Despite a brisk headwind down the Meadowlands backstretch, top sophomore pacing colt Modern Art posted an impressive 1:53.1 clocking, winning by more than a dozen lengths. With David Miller driving, Modern Art set fractions of :28, :57.4 and 1:26.3 (racing into the strong winds) before coming home in :26.3 with the wind at his back.

"I told Joe (trainer Joe Holloway) that the time was like a 1:51 mile on another day," Miller told The Horseman afterward. "He (Modern Art) is coming back exceptionally well. In fact, it's surprised me that he's come back so strong."

Holloway was also obviously pleased after the qualifer by Modern Art, the second straight winning one for the son of Artsplace. On April 16 Modern Art won in 1:55.4, last quarter in :26.4. Holloway told the Horseman that he plans on one more qualifier for Modern Art, who won the Woodrow Wilson and Governor's Cup last year at two, before starting him in a New Jersey Sire Stakes race at the Big M on May 15.
