It’s another big weekend of racing at Woodbine Mohawk Park, especially with the William Wellwood Memorial, where the winner gets a free pass into the upcoming Mohawk Million. In the new and free HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, driver Bob McClure talks about his strong chance with the undefeated colt Macho Martini, as well as the unbeaten filly Donna Soprano, who is the heavy favorite in the companion Peaceful Way on Saturday night.
Hambletonian champ Ramona Hill is returning to Mohawk on Friday night for the first time since last October’s huge Breeders Crown win from post 10. She’s the odds-on favorite in a Simcoe division. And while those first-year trotters are battling in Canada, the fastest division member has been residing in Kentucky. Al Eferstein fills in the details on Cuatro de Julio’s rise from Kentucky fair champ to 1:51.4 winner, which missed the world record by just one-fifth of a second. Also in the Bluegrass State, Meadowlands Pace and North America Cup winner Tall Dark Stranger races on Sunday in Kentucky Sires Stakes, and trainer Nancy Takter talks about the driver change to Dexter Dunn from Yannick Gingras, who has been competing the last few weeks in Canada.
The New York Sires Stakes championships take place on Saturday at Yonkers and we have plenty of stories, including a look at the likely battle between Hypnotic AM and Love A Good Story in the 3-year-old filly trot.
